I recently took my seven year old to see the family musical Riddle of the Trilobites at The New Victory Theater in New York City, and we had a blast! The original music, puppetry and story kept both of us captivated.

The story takes place 500 million years ago on the ocean floor, and involves a young trilobite and her friends saving her kind from the bad effects of climate change by solving a mystery. The story line was complex, and even I had to really pay attention to understand all the ins and outs of the plot, but that didn’t seem to phase my seven year old who enjoyed the music, costumes and humor even without really understanding the complex story line. It would be good for older kids too, since the story keeps it from being just for little kids.

The theater is beautiful and really caters to the kids. Before the show, they had some fun activities for the kids in the lower level, so they didn’t get restless. The show only ran 80 minutes with no intermission, so it was perfect for keeping my son’s attention. They also gave out booster cushions so kids could see the stage!

The theater is located at 209 West 42nd Street in Times Square. It was an easy walk from Grand Central, but you could also take the 42nd St Shuttle.
