What Moms Learned from Distance Learning

Share

After over 3 months of distance learning I am sure you can agree we all learned kids need school. They need it and we need it.  School provides so much more than just academics, which we learned can be done remotely.  What they need school for is emotional learning, social skills and routine.  As much as I tried routines we just did not have them the way school does.  Asking some mom friends to add to this list too, this is what we came up with.  Do you agree?

What we learned from distance learning is:

  • kids thrive off other kids. Their peers. Sure some have a sibling but that is not the same as their friends they see in class, at lunch or recess.
  • I cannot teach my kids. Although depending on the fall restrictions for schools I am still undecided on where they will be learning, teaching my own kids is so much harder than teaching others’ kids.  I love teaching kids, just not my own.

  • We needs breaks from each other, the kids and parents.  Which school provides.  My Starbucks runs have been meaningful for us all.
  • My kids can remember a bunch of log-ins for different websites and programs but cannot remember to shut the bathroom door.
  • I learned drinking in the shower is the new normal.
  • Muting on video meets is required due to animal sounds, kids fighting and all the other embarrassing sounds.
  • My kids know way more about technology than I do.
  • Everyone’s in a better mood all day when we don’t have to wake up at 6am every morning
  • My kids will do chores when they want to avoid or procrastinate doing schoolwork
  • My 6th grader is already way smarter than I am, especially in math and science, don’t understand 6th grade math.
  • I used more ink and printer paper these past 3 months than I have used in an entire year.
  • Kids are always hungry and there is NEVER enough food in the house.
  • There is way more laundry and dishes to wash.
  • There is a new norm- daytime PJs and nighttime PJs.
  • Bras are optional 😉
