Our lastest Small Business Mom, Nikki Amari, covers Rockland, Bergen, Passaic & Orange Counties with her photography business. Nikki Amari Photography (New York / New Jersey based) specializes in child, family, maternity and newborn portraits of use of natural light to create a lifetime of memories. She is the mom of two cuties: Brooke,4 and a son named Jason (lovingly referred to as “Meatball”) who just turned 3. Our latest Apple Mom answers our questions of owning a business while being a mom.
When did you start your business? I started my business in 2014 and have hit the ground running. It is very exciting to see the business grow in the manner that it is and I enjoy celebrating each and every milestone.
How did the idea come about? For as long as I can remember, I always had a fondness of being both behind and in front of the camera. Reliving life’s sweetest memories through photos is a gift that I cherish.
As a mother of two, now more than ever, I realize the importance of capturing life’s sweetest moments. Whether it be a newborn baby, a toddler, siblings or a family session, I appreciate the raw reality of everyday family life, the fleeting beauty of those in between moments and I strive to take every photograph with that in mind.
What is special about your business? I feel that my unique level of creativity and my meticulous attention to detail are clearly expressed in my photography. I also truly feel that if you do work you love, and the work fulfills you, the rest will come.
How do you manage having your own business and motherhood? Being a mother is a 24/7 hour job. It’s constantly a juggling act so I try to be structured and scheduled as much as possible. I also have a very supportive husband that allows us to function and get done what needs to be done.
Walk us through a typical day: My day starts at 6:30AM with me first! I get showered before the kids wake up, get them up, fed, washed up, dressed, off to school, go to my shoot, pick them up from a half day and continue onto play dates, gymnastics, dance and the toddler gym. After this, it’s dinner, baths, bed and TIME TO EDIT pictures. I am a night owl so I sometimes can be up until 1am working on photos with no time taken away from my children!
If you had to give one piece of advice to a mom wanting to start her own business what would it be? As challenging as it may be (especially when you are sleep deprived), where there is a will, there is a way. Sales are contingent upon the attitude of the salesman – not the attitude of the potential customer.
