RACE 4 A CURE EVENT HIGHLIGHTS NEED FOR MORE RESEARCH FOR AMERICA’S DEADLIEST CANCER

Event Raises More Than $150,000 for Urgently Needed Pancreatic Cancer Research

A
Committee families from Westchester & Fairfield Counties came together to honor their loved ones affected by pancreatic cancer at the 2nd Annual Race 4 A Cure.

April 22, 2016 The 2nd annual Lustgarten Foundation Race 4 A Cure took place on Friday, February 26th at Grand Prix New York, a fun-filled family and corporate entertainment complex in Mount Kisco. Nearly 500 people attended, raising more than $157,000 for critical pancreatic cancer research.

Entertainment for the event included music from Total Entertainment, “Arrive and Drive” indoor go kart racing, bowling at GPNY’s Spins Bowl lanes, bounce house, and a $20 credit for the arcade. The fundraiser, emceed by Lisa LaRocca of News 12 Westchester, also featured a varied menu from Restaurant North and Kira Sushi. Attendees also enjoyed a silent auction featuring incredible prizes including vacation packages, sports memorabilia and tickets, gift cards from top-rated restaurants, and show tickets and entertainment.

All proceeds benefit The Lustgarten Foundation, the nation’s largest private funder of pancreatic cancer research, and will help accelerate the path towards a cure for this aggressive, life-threatening disease.  In fact, pancreatic cancer is projected to become the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in 2016, making it even more crucial to fund additional research now and offer renewed hope for patients.

“The superior work of the committee from Westchester and Fairfield Counties made this event an incredible success, raising even more funding for pancreatic cancer research than last year’s event,” said Kerri Kaplan, Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, The Lustgarten Foundation. “This fundraiser reinforces how much we can accomplish when people impacted by pancreatic cancer come together to honor their loves ones and make a difference by supporting much-needed research.”

“We were very excited to help and host the 2nd annual event at GPNY,” said Nat Mundy, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing of Diamond Hospitality Group. “It’s a wonderful organization and the committee did an amazing job making the event a success”.

The two Race 4 A Cure events have raised more than $300,000 for research on early detection and new treatments. Thanks to the support of Cablevision Systems Corporation, 100% of every dollar donated to The Lustgarten Foundation goes directly to pancreatic cancer research.

About Pancreatic Cancer

With an overall survival rate of just eight percent over five years, pancreatic cancer has no early detection tests, no effective long-term treatments and, unless the cancer is surgically removed in its earliest stages, no cure.  An estimated 53,000 Americans will be diagnosed this year alone, and more than 41,000 will die of the disease.  The Lustgarten Foundation is working to change these grim statistics by advancing the scientific and medical research related to the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and cure of pancreatic cancer.  Research efforts underway include:

  • Clinical trials to develop blood tests and new imaging strategies to detect pancreatic cancer earlier
  • Studies focused on immunotherapy and new drug combinations to identify more effective treatment options
  • New methods of drug delivery to ensure the drug reaches the pancreatic tumor
