Putnam’s Most Valuable Mommy Resource

My friend just had her first baby this past Saturday, and it has been making me think back to when my first daughter was born.  We decided to let her gender be a surprise to us when she was born so I spent 9 LONG months wishing for a little girl and I was thrilled when she came out a she!  However, a few days later reality set in and I like many other women, discovered I had NO idea what I was doing.  My husband had gotten a new job so I was going to have the means to become a Stay at Home Mom, and I was completely overwhelmed, and lonely.

I was ticking off the days like a prisoner waiting for her to have her shots so we could go out, when I realized I had no where to go.  Then I remembered the Health Department Nurse that came by to see me right after I brought her home.  A little known secret is that every new baby born in Putnam County is entitled to have home visits from a nurse.  They will come over and help you with breastfeeding if you need it or just weigh your baby to make sure they are gaining weight in between well baby visits.  This was especially helpful with my now 7 month who was very sleepy and not gaining very quickly when she first came home.

On top of doing these visits, the nurses run a new Mom’s group at both the Kent and Mahopac libraries.  It is a drop in program, and you can stay for the entire two hours or pop in for five minutes.  Some of the best mom friends I have I met four years ago at this group, and my daughter still asks for some of the kids we used to see there.  The best part is there is always one if not two nurses to answer questions and give advice on anything you might be experiencing the first year of motherhood.  Those weekly meetings where like a life line for me to have a reason to get out of the house and know I was not alone.

If you are interested in checking it out the group meets at the Kent Library on Mondays from 12:30 to 2:30 and at the Mahopac Library on Fridays from 2 to 4.
