New York Botanical Gardens Haunted Pumpkin Garden Review #nybg @nybg

Share

On Friday, my husband and I packed up the girls and headed down to the New York Botanical Gardens.  I have been to the Bronx Zoo more times than I can count but never made it over to the Gardens.  So when we were offered the chance to review the Haunted Pumpkin Garden, my hand went up, and I was not disappointed.

First off if you have never been to the Gardens, it is worth the visit just for the beauty of the park alone.  Right now the leaves are changing and the weather is comfortable to be outside in, which makes for a perfect day.  It’s an easy walk for both kids and adults, and when you get tired you can hop on the Tram at one of the multiple stops around the park.

We left Carmel, around 1 and made it there before 2, so just enough time to let my 4 year old recharge, with an after school power nap.  The staff was helpful and friendly when we arrived, and throughout our afternoon.

Once we got inside we headed straight to the Everett Children’s Adventure Gardens, where the Haunted Pumpkin Garden is on display (now through October 31st).  It was super cool, my four year old loved checking everything out and finding all the hidden pumpkins, and decorations throughout the garden.  We went into the Conservatory building as well and she had a great time making a germination necklace, where she placed two pumpkin seeds into a bag with a wet paper towel, sealed it and put it on a string to wear around her neck.  (I am totally stealing this idea and doing this as a craft in the spring with her pre-school class)  She also got to decorate a “treasure” bag to pick up anything she wanted off the ground.  She was more impressed with making the bag than filling it, much to my relief!

I am also a sucker for roses, so we had to make a visit to the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden, which made me feel like I was in Alice in Wonderland.  It is definitely worth a return visit to see at it’s peak blooming time.

It was very quiet on the day we went, so my four year was able to roam free, but it can get crowded on the weekends when they are having special programs, so be prepared.  For more information on the New York Botanical Gardens and the Haunted Pumpkin Garden visit their website at http://www.nybg.org/
